Cure from Muraqaba (Meditation)

Author: Shaikh Khawaja Shamsuddin Azeemi

Definition of Meditation

You free your mind from different thoughts and you concentrate on one point.
  1. As fictitious senses lose their grip, man enters into the state of meditation
  2. When humans develop and achieve the dream state in a wakeful state, they enter into the state of meditation
  3. This is also a form of meditation in which humans can hear and see far off or distant events
  4. When a person enters into a subconscious state from the conscious state, this change is also called meditation
  5. In meditation a person’s mind gets so concentrated that he visualizes God watching him
  6. In meditation a time comes when a person who meditates (the observer) visualizes that he is watching God.

Advantages of Meditation

Anyone who does meditation enjoys the following advantages

Types of Meditation

Meditation is of many different types, some of which we are discussing here.

Rules for Meditation

Best Time for Meditation

Breathing Exercise

If you do the breathing exercise before meditation it will help to be more successful during meditation.

Sit facing north and then do the following:

This is one round of breathing excise. Do five rounds of this exercise. Before doing the breath exercise loosen up your body so as to eliminate all stress and tension. Line up your spinal cord and neck and make sure your stomach is empty before doing your breathing exercise. The area where you are doing the meditation should have proper ventilation and fresh air so that you can absorb the maximum amount of oxygen. Keep doors and windows open when you do breathing exercises in winter. Try to avoid eating sweet and sour food, but don’t stop eating it completely. Don’t consume too much salt.

There are two ways of getting knowledge. One is called “acquired knowledge” (Ilm-e-Husooli). In this method in order to acquire knowledge, we use our mind as much as possible, achieving our goal by physical and mental exercise. To learn “acquired knowledge” the teacher helps to activate the student’s abilities. He can also guide and instruct the student as he progresses. The student, in turn, follows the instructions and guidance of his teacher, thus displaying his or her abilities and skills.

In this method the role of the teacher is limited to apparent guidance, whereas the student has to do all the real work.

The other way of learning is called “Insinuated knowledge” (Ilm-e-Huzzori). In this method the teacher must do a lot of hard work, which is in contrast to “acquired knowledge”, and the student does much less work. In this method the student should try to sit in a position in which the spinal cord lines up straight. This is to assure that the flow of light around the spinal cord is not wasted. Also, when you meditate you should not lean against the wall or anything else because if you do, then you squander the flow of light. The first step in learning “Insinuated knowledge” is meditation. Insinuated knowledge, is transferred like an inheritance. This is why spiritual students always obey their spiritual teacher, unlike students who learn “acquired knowledge”. One does not have to be educated in order to learn “insinuated knowledge.” Adam, for instance, received “insinuated knowledge,” without a conventional education. Students learn “acquired knowledge, but in the case of “Insinuated knowledge” the spiritual teacher transfers it to the student. Actually “insinuated knowledge,” is that knowledge of God which was transferred to Adam as knowledge of names of God (Ilm-ul-Isma). To learn you must have a teacher who has the knowledge of spiritual laws and the excellent knowledge of “insinuated knowledge,” so he can impart it to his students.

Before doing meditation, you may wish to use a perfume of your choice, since it helps one to concentrate more quickly.

How to do Meditation

After reading or reciting something, if you want, sit facing north (if you face the rising sun, then north will be on your right). Sit with your eyes closed. It is better to face north, but meditation can be done facing in any direction, concentrating on a given point.

As thoughts keep coming during meditation, don’t get stuck in thoughts and let them slip. Make your mind concentrate again on the point of meditation. Duration of meditation may vary between 15 and 20 minutes. You can increase the amount of time. But don’t start meditation without a schedule, and don’t do it at the cost of abandoning all your work.

Meditation should be done on a plank or floor. Don’t meditate in a chair, sofa, mattress, or anything that can cause interruption of the meditation.

Complexity in Thoughts

When a person meditates with eyes closed, he has a stream of thoughts in his mind. The person meditating is disturbed by many different kinds of thoughts, which create distractions and keep the person from visualizing anything in meditation. The best way of avoiding this situation is to let the thoughts come but not to be stuck in them. Let them come and go. Initially it is difficult for the person doing meditation to get rid of these thoughts. One may flow in the stream of thoughts but practice can bring one’s mind back on track. This is possible by continuous practice. You can do it.

Meditation of the Spiritual Teacher (Tasawer-e-shaikh)

Spiritual students must have a clear concept of the base of knowledge of God, and this is provided by the spiritual teacher who makes the concept strong and firm. The basis for knowing about God is the belief in the unity of God. Belief in the unity of God means that there should be nothing in your imagination except God. When you achieve this stage then will power will take to The Source of Information (Nuqta-e-Zaat). The deepest point of “Source of Information” is Soul (Qulb) where the reflections of imaginations become visible. The Imprints of imagination (Tasawer) are the sketch of God’s commands (Ammar). On these clear imprints the soul displays the commands of God. These displays are the activities, actions, and motions of human life. To live a successful life, one must know the laws of nature through which the commands of God can be displayed. The creation of the universe and the displays are a form of God’s command. Soul is unique in its nature and attributes. The basis of the existence of everything in this universe is the belief in the unity of God (whadaniyat), and this belief or point is the Nuqta-e-Zaat, or Source of Information of everything. For example, we can say that every particle of the atom is also an atom and cannot be anything else. Therefore, with the help of Nuqta-e-Zaat, or Source of Information, humans can understand more clearly the belief in the unity of God. The Spiritual mentor helps you to get close and understand your soul. When the student spends most of his time close to his teacher he becomes imbued with his love and the way the spiritual teacher thinks and looks at different issues.

Then the time comes when the student sees his spiritual teacher in his imagination everywhere. The only person who is predominant in the student’s heart and senses is the spiritual teacher.

At this point the soul of the student actually enters the stage of “Fana Fil Shaikh” (to be lost in the contemplation of the spiritual mentor and insensible to all else). The essence of his nature (Zaat) at this stage actually becomes vision (Nazar) whose only function is to look. This vision remains fixed in his imagination on his spiritual teacher. At this point he feels that time has stopped and the speed of life has ceased. He sees his spiritual teacher in himself. His spiritual vision, or third eye, goes to the deepest point of the soul where the image of the spiritual teacher helps him to concentrate and reflect. This real moment of time gets lost in eternity (Abud). The spiritual reflection of the teacher now matches his student and the spiritual knowledge of the teacher begins to transfer to the student. He comes to realize that until “Source of Information” is enlightened with the light of the unity of God (whadaniyat), nothing is going to come out of it. But when the source of information of the devotee is enlightened with the light of his spiritual mentor, then the divine light is deposited in the Chakras of the devotee and he completes his stages of “Qurb” (closeness).

Q1: Why do we do the imaging of the Spiritual Teacher (Tasawer-e-Shaikh) in meditation instead of that of God?

Answer: When Adam was in heaven only the part of the brain that related to the knowledge of God was active. But as soon as he committed disobedience, another part of the brain relating to disobedience was created. This is why all the thoughts that come into consciousness are defective and impure. The knowledge of God cannot be understood by the consciousness. The divine light of God cannot enter into the consciousness because Adam was created of rotten clay and all the bad attributes that were properties of rotten clay transfer to Adam, properties such as filth and stench.

When the devotee does meditation while keeping all the negative aspects in mind about how Adam was created, he can visualize his own weaknesses and place his problems before his spiritual teacher. Then the spiritual mentor does his kindness and transfers his imprint of polished and pure personality to his student. He also cleanses the student’s personality to such an extent that the student’s consciousness reaches the state of ultimate purity. Thus the imaging of the spiritual teacher is done so that he can transfer his spiritual knowledge to his student.

The person who does meditation thus sits in a dark room and then imagines his spiritual teacher. Meditation on the spiritual teacher (Tasawer-e-Shaikh) means a state of mind in which there are no other thoughts in mind except the image of the spiritual teacher. It is very important to understand that meditation does not mean that you try to visualize different aspects or the physical parts of the body of your spiritual teacher, for example, that he has a beard or that dresses in a certain way. Nothing of the sort is meant. What meditation actually means is that the spiritual teacher is your point of concentration and that you are absorbed in this image without designing and making images on your own. People often ask why in meditation we begin with the imagined image of the spiritual teacher instead of God.

God says that he made Adam his caliph, or ruler, on earth. Before deputing Adam as a caliph, God gave him all knowledge and told him that his responsibilities as Caliph were to spread this knowledge according to the law of God. God says that all the prophets who came into the world were humans.

In chapter Al-amboa. verse eight, God says “and I didn’t create the bodies of prophets who did not eat and they were not going to live in this world for ever.”

God has sent the prophets for the guidance of humans. This is shown by the verse cited above, which says that God has sent humans as Caliphs and prophets to guide humankind. Those who do not follow the teaching of these noble people stray from God. They do not receive the knowledge of the names of God (Isma-e-Ilahi), which does not transfer to them. It is God’s prerogative to transfer this special knowledge to deserving people. Adam acts as the assistant of God, and being human with all the attributes and desires of a human, and when the line of prophets have stopped, their work is being done by Auliya Allah ( Friends of God). And this is the reason why the imagination of the spiritual teacher is asked in meditation (Tasawer-e-shaikh). As far as material resources, facilities, and ease are concerned, they do not provide serenity, and it is very evident that materialism has failed to provide peace to humans. For example, about fifty years ago people did not have many resources but they had more peace of mind. Today we do not have that peace even though we have everything in our homes. We own a house, TV, car, and a bank account. Those who have more resources have less peace of mind. One reason for this is that we are more interested in a materialistic way of life. Yet we see also that when someone dies, his interest in this world also vanishes. Similarly, if someone is backward or inactive, they take no active role in life. So the law is that until and unless you take an interest in the world, you will not feel that this world is worth the trouble. But when we take an interest in this world, we will get busy and busyness means expenditure of energy, and when we expend our energy we will get tired, for instance, of marriage related work. People who work too hard in different jobs get tired in a similar way. When you do laborious jobs you get tired physically, regardless of whether you work sitting in a chair, or digging in the ground, or knitting the mat itself. So when you take an interest in anything and work on it then you get tired. In other words, when you work you lose your energy, and the best way to overcome tiredness is to take rest or sleep. If a person is overly tired, he can sleep to reenergize himself. Thus we can say that when we take an interest in this world we get tired because we lose our energy, which scientists describe in terms of calories. These calories were created in our bodies as we eat or drink, and we expend calories as we work. The amount of calories we expend determines how tired we get. To illustrate, there is a room, which has only one bed with a neat, clean mattress and bed sheet on it. The room contains nothing else. When you enter it the only thought that comes to your mind will be that this bed is for resting and that I should take some rest. Therefore, whatever calories you expend will be limited to the bed, mattress, and sheet.

So when other items make an impression on your mind and tell you that this is a bed, you have actually expended energy. For instance, where there is a bed sheet, pillow, bed, and mattress present in a room, we consume four calories for each item. Now then, if we place a TV in the room, it means that we have consumed one more calorie. Now if we turn on this TV, then every scene will go into your mind and you consume one calorie. This means that a tree in the scene, a man, a song, a color etc. all suppose the consumption of calories. Let’s suppose we consume around 50 calories in all. This means that a room, which was made for your rest and was consuming 4 calories, is now consuming 54 calories. And if we put a radio in the room without turning it on, it would still consume 1 calorie. This would make a total of 55 calories consumed. Now let’s put a cupboard in the room and place scores of different items in the cupboard, for example, a doll, books, bouquet, astray, and assorted clothes. Again, these items would consume more of your calories, perhaps bringing the total number to 75 (55+20). Now let’s suppose there is a chair next to the cupboard. This means that we are now consuming 60,70, or 80 calories instead of 5 as the room was initially set up for five items. These calories are your life stream and your life actually depends on them. So the number of calories expended would increase as you increase the different items around you. When you get tired all parts of your body also tire, and when the calories are burned it will reduce your life stream. And if we don’t have enough life energy, then how can we live a happy and peaceful life. There was no radio, TV, motorcycle, airplanes, or noise-making machines at the time of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.), but even then the lights of the city Mecca, the noise of the city and the bells which hang from the necks of camels caused Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) to divert his attention to the cave Hira, which was miles from Mecca. There was nothing in cave Hira, no bed and no other things for ease of life. Actually, Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) knew that disturbances create anxiety in humans and take peace from them. So the more you live in noise, the more removed you are from peace. Today science tells us the same thing. Nowadays we have this example: people who live in villages have far better health than those who live in cities. You can see for yourself that very few children who live in villages wear glasses, whereas many who live in cities do wear them. So what is the point? The point is that in villages there are no disturbances or noise, which means that people have more calories and energy.

Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) used to go to cave Hira and did meditation. It is important to understand that if God had wished, he would have sent “Torah” down in the city. But instead Prophet Moses stayed 40 days and 40 nights on Mount Sinai where there was nothing of the luxury of life. There was one mountain, one Moses and his club. Thus the more your conscious mind takes an interest in materialistic things, the more you will lack peace. The biggest problem today is that we have no peace in our lives, and the main reason is that we have given first preference to the materialistic life and think that the world is the principal purpose of living. The situation today is that we are trying out best to prove that we have been created for the world, not that the world was created for us. This means that we are ruining our life for this world because we have given this world priority over ourselves. And by granting this priority over ourselves, we have reduced our dignity and are thus unable to live peacefully. The truth is that we have not been created for this world. Instead, the world was created for us. There is no single person who can say that the world was created after his birth, or the birth of his father, or his grandfather. Rather God created the world to serve us, but the reality is that we are serving the world. The situation is the very opposite of what it was supposed to be. This means that our way of life goes against nature, and when someone tries to live against nature, he cannot live in peace. God says, “You get spiritual peace only by repeated invocation of God’s name.” There is a relationship between God and his creature, and when you develop this relationship you achieve spiritual peace. This is the basic difference between a spiritual and non-spiritual man. Non-spiritual man intentionally or unintentionally thinks that he has been created for this world, even though it is not true. A child stays for nine months in the mother’s womb, and after birth God puts love for the child in the parents’ heart so they will care for the child. By age 19 or 20 the child thinks that he can do everything himself and that he was created for this world. When we talk against nature and live our life in opposition to nature, then how can we live a happy life?
